Some properties have not received a wheeled recycling bin because it is not possible to service them at present.
There are no changes to refuse or recycling collection days over the Bank Holiday periods. Please put your refuse and recycling out on your normal collection day at the normal time. Some properties in Arundel have a recycling sack collection. Should you require extra sacks for recycling please visit: Tourist Information Centre, Crown Yard or Arundel Town Hall, Maltravers Street.
Assisted Collections
Assisted collection arrangements will be made for qualifying residents who are unable to move their refuse or recycling to the front of their property. If you wish to apply for an assisted collection download an application form. Alternatively call 01903 737754 to request a form. If you live in a flat, then you will either have a large recycling bin or a number or green wheeled recycling bins. These will be kept in the bin store or near the rubbish bins.
Recycling bins are not suitable for all flats due to space on site and access for collection. Dimensions for large blue top recycling bin
Height 1380 mm
Length 1270 mm
Width 1000 mm
Capacity 1100 litres Recycling is now even easier! Arun’s recyclables are now being taken to the new Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at Ford, which has the technology to separate mixed recyclables and sort them by type which means that from the 6th April 2009 additional items can be added to the blue top recycling bin. From 6th April 2009 you can start to put the following additional materials in your blue top recycling bin:
· Glass bottles and jars
· Paper based food and drink cartons (such as Tetra Pak)
· Aluminium foil and aluminium containers
· Aerosol cans
Please continue to recycle in your blue top recycling bin the existing items:
All items in the blue top bin should be clean, dry and loose - no plastic bags please. ![]() Remember to rinse and squash items before putting them loose in your blue top recycling bin.
How can I save room in my blue top recycling bin and recycle correctly?
• Save room in your blue top bin by squashing plastic bottles and flattening cardboard, cartons, tins and drink cans.
• Plastic bottles stay squashed if you squash them in warm washing up water once you have finished your washing up.
• Rinse items before putting them in the blue top bin to keep your bin clean and the quality of recyclables high.
• Plastic bottles only. Other items such as margarine tubs and food trays, even if they have the recycling symbol on them, cannot be put in the blue top bin.
• Shredded paper cannot be put in the blue top bin as the MRF machinery cannot sort materials this thin and light – try home composting it instead or put it in your refuse bin.
• Check if a foil packet is aluminium using the scrunch test. If the item springs back into shape after you scrunch it then it is plastic designed to look like a foil; please put these items in your refuse.
• Window envelopes can be recycled; the plastic part is removed during the recycling process.
What is Contamination?
Recycling becomes contaminated when items are placed into the recycling bins that cannot be recycled. If the amount of contamination is too high then the whole load of recyclables may be diverted to landfill. It is therefore requested that householders keep a diligent eye on what they place into the recycling bin and refer to the information leaflet and bin sticker. If in doubt either ask or do not place it in the blue topped recycling bin.
1) Is there any type of glass I cannot recycle?
Glass bottles and jars can be recycled but not window glass or household items such as Pyrex dishes or drinking glasses. These need to be disposed of in the refuse bin as they have particular qualities that make them unsuitable for recycling.
2) Can I recycle plastic containers such as margarine and yogurt pots?
Presently we can only collect plastic bottles in any size or shape as the plastics used for other items such as yogurt pots, margarine tubs and ice cream containers are not acceptable to the plastics industry. This is because they are often a mixed form of plastic and there is limited market value for them in this part of the world. Please place these other plastic containers in the refuse.
3) Can I recycle Plastic Bags?
Plastic bags should never be placed into your blue top recycling bin but should either be put into your refuse bin, used again or possibly returned to the shop where you got them where they can sometimes be recycled.
We suggest that, where possible, you acquire a re-usable shopping bag that you can take with you when you go out shopping. Alternatively, some people like to keep bags in the boot of their car or have a bag that can be kept up in a bag or jacket for unplanned shopping trips.
4) Can I recycle plastic bottle tops?
All plastic bottle tops should be put into the refuse bin as they are too small to be recycled by the machinery. Plastic bottle lids are often made of a type of plastic that is difficult to recycle.
5) Can I recycle glass bottle and jar lids?
Metal lids from glass jars can be recycled in the blue top bin if they are removed and put in the bin separately. Metal lids from glass bottles should be put into the refuse bin as they are too small to be recycled by the machinery at the sorting facility.
Metal lids from food cans and tins are acceptable in the blue top recycling bin.
6) Is it best to crumple or fold alumimium foil before placing it in the recycling bin?
The answer is, once rinsed, "crumple the foil" if you can before placing in t in the recycling bin .

![]() Since the introduction of the blue top recycling bins there has been a massive rise in the amount of rubbish recycled in the district. This is all thanks to your efforts and dedication. Between April 2008 and September 2008 we collected 37.17% of your rubbish for recycling and composting. We collected 26.47% of your rubbish for recycling and 10.7% of your rubbish for composting – that’s 14664 tonnes, the weight of 36 fully loaded jumbo jets, 1.27% was taken for energy recovery.
This is a fantastic achievement with the total amount recycled and composted last year more than the amount recycled in the whole of the previous two years put together.
We are moving in the right direction, but we all need to do more. Waste is an important issue and to plan for the future, Arun District Council has set itself targets for recycling and composting targets and waste reduction. The targets and how we are going to achieve them can be found in the Household Waste and Recycling Strategy.
