Environmental Health - Protecting our community

Energy Efficiency for Businesses

When we think of energy efficiency many of us think about our homes and how we can save energy and reduce our energy bills but few of us think about how we can do this in the workplace. However, if you own your own business then there are real savings to be made by employing energy efficiency strategies in your workplace. These can range from simple behavioural changes, such as switching lights of when they are not needed, to capital investment in new energy efficient equipment, such as purchasing a more efficient heating system.

This page has been developed to help local businesses to assess the different options available to them when looking at saving energy. It will be updated regularly with the latest information on energy efficiency for businesses. Please click on a article below to find out more.

If you require further information please contact Arun District Council's Energy Efficiency Officer, on 01903 737755 or email energy.efficiency@arun.gov.uk

Carbon Trust - Interest Free Loans

Although many energy saving measures involve little or no expenditure, some organisations find that they need to invest in new equipment in order to reduce their energy consumption. To help small businesses make these investments, the Carbon Trust offers interest-free loans of between £5,000 and £50,000 to fund the cost of buying energy equipment.

Completely interest-free

Repayment period of 4 years

No arrangement fees

Once energy efficient equipment is installed, it will start saving your company money every year. Many companies find they can pay off the loan through the energy savings they make.

Loans are available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that have been trading for at least 12 months. A business is classified as an SME if:

you have no more than 250 employees

you have an annual turnover of less than 40 million euros (~£25m), or an annual balance sheet total under 27 million euros (~£17m)

less than 25% of the capital or voting right is owned by an enterprise which is not itself a SME.

Loans are not currently available to companies in the Transport sector or those linked to the promotion, processing or marketing of Agricultural or Fisheries products.

For more information on the availability of loans please visit the Carbon Trust's website at www.thecarbontrust.co.uk  or call their helpline on 0800 085 2005.
