Customer Notice System - Missed Refuse and Recycling Collections

Starting on Monday 22nd March customers not receiving a collection for any legitimate reason will receive a written notice to inform them of the reasons why the collection was not possible.

Legitimate reasons may include:
  • Waste storage point unreasonably inaccessible.
  • Blocked access or locked gates.
  • Waste not made available or reasonably contained.
  • Refuse has contained garden waste.

The new system has been brought in to inform customers as to why waste has not been collected.

If your rubbish or recycling has not been collected please return it to inside the boundary of your propertyOn your next collection day we will only remove five bags of refuse, therefore, any excess refuse will need to be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Site.  If your recycling has been marked contaminated, please remove the contamination, your bin can then be placed on your boundary for your next recycling collection.

Collection Point

Refuse will be collected each week from the edge of your property nearest the highway. Refuse should be placed out for collection by 7.00 am.

Collection day

To find out what your collection day is, look on the collection page.
A copy of the 2010 calendar can be found here 2010_Collection_Calendar

Refuse Collection - what can and cannot be taken
Household waste includes rubbish that is generated on an everyday basis day such as leftover food.

It does not include items such as paint tins, electrical items, carpets, furtniture, large toys, tyres and asbestos. These should be taken to the nearest Household Waste Recycling Site .

It also does not include clinical or business waste.

Assisted Collections
Assisted collection arrangements will be made for qualifying residents who are unable to move their refuse to the front of their property. If you wish to apply for an assisted collection please call Arun Direct on 01903 737754.

Refuse Limit
There is a limit on the volume of refuse a household can put out each week. The maximum amount of refuse households can place is up to five standard size black sacks (1 standard sack = approx 90 litres) a week, which are, when tied, the equivalent volume to the contents of one 240 litre wheeled bin for general refuse.

There is a limit on refuse because you can recycle lots of your rubbish in the wheeled recycling bin, also we need to reduce down the amount of waste going to landfill.

Refuse should be left out by 7am on collection day. It should be contained in secured black sacks or in black sacks contained within your dustbin. If you use a wheelie bin for your refuse please place it were your property meets the pavement. Arun District Council does not supply containers.

Purchase a wheeled refuse bin

You may wish to purchase a wheeled refuse bin to store your refuse in prior to collection. The maximum size that can be collected is a 240 litre bin. These can be purchased from most hardware stores/garden centres throughout the district. Alternatively you can buy one for £41.96 including VAT and delivery charge from our contractors Verdant on 01903 734520.

What to do if your refuse or recycling is not collected

If your refuse or kerbside recycling has not been collected by 5pm on your day of collection it needs to be reported with in 48 hours of the scheduled collection to:

Arun District Council, Cleansing Services on 01903 737754

Bank Holiday
Arun District Council now operates a fixed day refuse collection system. This means that your refuse collection day will remain the same throughout the year. On a bank holiday, please leave your refuse out on your normal collection day.

You can find out when your refuse or recycling collection is scheduled here.

Seaweed on the beach

Seaweed is deposited on the District's beaches at various times of the year. Seaweed is an important part of the marine ecology.  In general, the deposits are removed naturally by tides in a matter of days. Removal of seaweed is regulated by Fisheries under specific legislation.

The Council's policy on seaweed removal is to allow normal tidal movements to remove the seaweed wherever possible, we will monitor the situation and may take steps to remove where the seaweed depth becomes excessive.  In periods of dry weather and low tides it will be expected that it may smell but this is not grounds for removal.
