Home Composting Don't waste money buying compost - make your own
Home composting is the most cost-effective and sustainable way to dispose of garden waste and raw kitchen waste. More than 25% of your household rubbish can be composted, so it is a great way to reduce the amount you throw away. By using your own compost you can improve the quality of your soil and help protect natural peat habitats.
Composting is a great way to keep your garden waste out of landfill sites. Garden waste is biodegradable and once in landfill breaks down producing methane, one of the green house gases attributed to global warming.

How to compost
Find a patch of bare soil in your garden and either install a compost bin, or start your own compost heap. A compost bin will contain your heap and help to keep it warm and moist. See details on how to order a compost bin above.
The following materials can be composted:
Your compost heap will work best if you use an equal mixture of green and brown material. Green material will rot quickly and is high in Nitrogen. Brown material is slower to rot and is high in carbon. Materials will break down more quickly if you cut them into small pieces, about 20-25 cm long.
Do not compost the following materials:
Finished compost
Finished compost is found at the bottom of your heap. It will be dark brown, crumbly and have an earthy smell. It takes between 6 -18 months for material to break down into compost. Use it to feed the lawn, top up potted plants and baskets or dig it into the soil.
Worm Composting (Vermi-composting)
The special 'tiger worms' in a Worm compost bin convert food waste into compost and a concentrated liquid feed. The advantage of worm composting is that it can be done indoors, perfect if you do not have a garden. Wormery containers and worms can be purchased from many garden centres.
Further Composting Information If you are unable to compost at home you can take your green waste to a Household Waste Recycling Site at Mill Lane in Littlehampton or Shripney Road in Bognor Regis.
