Equal Opportunities
The Council is committed to equal opportunities in employment. To ensure that our policies are effectively applied, we ask you to complete an "Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form" which is part of the application pack.
The form is confidential for monitoring purposes only and kept separately from your application form. The HR staff will detach the monitoring form before your application is passed to the manager responsible for selecting the short-list.

Disability and the Guaranteed Interview Scheme
Arun District Council recognises that people with disabilities have significant skills, qualifications and experience to offer and can contribute significantly to the success of an organisation yet often face unnecessary barriers to employment. The Council is committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment for disabled people and will act positively in examining whether reasonable adjustments can be made to working practices to overcome the barrier presented by disability. If you have a disability which makes it difficult to complete an application form, please contact our Human Resources Section who will be happy to assist. We also guarantee to interview anyone with a disability whose application can demonstrate that they meet the essential criteria for the post, as detailed in the job description.
A 'disability' as defined by the Equality Act 2010 applies to a person who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
Information given on the "Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form" will be used for monitoring purposes
Working with Vulnerable People
As part of its recruitment practice the Council will seek disclosure of criminal records for potential employees who will be working with young people or other vulnerable people. Should the post that you are applying for fall into this category, the job page for the post you are interested in will specify the need to obtain a criminal record check.
Application Form
We use application forms to enable us to make a fair comparison between candidates on an equal basis and the information you provide will be the foundation for our decisions about which applicants should be invited to interview. Please take time to consider the information you think might be most useful to us in assessing your application.
To assist you when completing the application form, please ensure that you download the Job Description and Person Specification from the relevant job page. It is important that you refer to the Person Specification when completing your application, as this is the criteria that the manager will use when short listing for interviews.
If after viewing the Job Description and the Person specification you feel you are suitable for the position, please complete the online application form - available under the post you wish to apply for.
We hope that you will be successful in your application, but if you have not heard from us within three weeks of the closing date, then we must ask you to assume that you have not been selected for interview. In that event, we would like to thank you for your interest in this vacancy and to express the hope that you will not be deterred from applying for future job opportunities with the Council.
Interviews
Arun District Council practises panel interviews, which means that you will be interviewed by at least two people. During the interview the managers will ask a standard set of questions relating to the requirements of the post and individual questions about the content of the application form.
Tests or Presentations
Depending on the type of vacancy, some managers will set up certain tests or exercises for candidates to carry out so they can have a greater insight into candidates’ abilities. These might include presentations, written exercises, numerical or typing tests. Candidates that are selected for interview will be informed in their letter of invitation whether preparation for a presentation or other test will be needed.

Pre Employment Medical Questionnaire
Successful applicants will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and should complete and return the form as soon as possible. The form will be forwarded onto our Occupational Health providers who may need to see you before they are able to confirm satisfactory medical clearance. Please note that any appointment is subject to satisfactory medical clearance.
Asylum and Immigration Act 1996
In order to comply with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 applicants will be required to produce official documents to confirm their immigration status. These will be identified and requested prior to the commencement of employment.
A minimum requirement if invited to attend an interview for a post will be to produce an official document showing a National Insurance number or, if this is not possible, a passport or a letter from the Home Office confirming eligibility to live and work in the UK. Please note that any failure to comply with this request may delay commencement of employment as any job offer made is subject to an applicant having the right to live and work in the UK.
General Conditions of Appointment
