Asbestos/ Asbestos in the home

Although we are unable to take any action to remove or test for asbestos in domestic premises, we are able to offer general advice.

Any matters concerning removal of larger quantities, particularly where builders are involved, should be referred to the Health & Safety Executive who are responsible for enforcing the Asbestos Regulations in domestic premises where work is being undertaken.

Their local address is:

Health & Safety Executive
The Council Offices
Station Road East
Oxted
Surrey
RH8 0BT

Tel: 01883 732400

If you have asbestos cement containing materials and wish to dispose of it yourself you must take it to an approved disposal site. You should however be aware that only a few of the West Sussex County Council Amenity Sites accept small quantities of asbestos waste from domestic properties, and you should contact them prior to taking any material in order to check they have enough capacity.

The nearest sites are:

Brighton Road
Shoreham
BN43 6RJ

Tel Site: 01273 454081

Coach Road
Westhampnett
Chichester
PO18 0NN

Tel Site: 01243 787300

These sites do not accept asbestos cement products unless it is wrapped in suitable 1000 gauge polythene or double bagged in rubble bags. These bags are available from builders’ merchants and must be sealed with tape when the items are taken to the sites.

A full list of West Sussex Amenity sites can be viewed at West Sussex County Council: Household waste and recycling

For further information on disposal of asbestos by householders, contact West Sussex County Council, Waste Management Services on 01243 777595 or email wastes.management@westsussex.gov.uk
