Arun

The Foreshores of Arun

A choice of traditional sea side fun, modern amusements, clean, safe, award winning beaches, conservation areas and a welcoming attitude to jet-skis, wind surfers and kite surfers all within Arun’s fourteen and a half miles of beautiful, thoughtfully managed coastline

Foreshore Officers
On duty from April to September our friendly Foreshore Officers patrol the promenades and operate a first aid post .

Lifeguard Service
This is only available at Littlehampton from May to the 15th of September. We have a team of trained RLSS lifeguards which patrols the beaches, operate a safety boat and patrol boat ensuring that you can enjoy the sea in relative safety.

Lost Children
We operate a free Kid Care armband service. On arrival at either Littlehampton or Bognor Regis go to the Foreshore Office or ask the Lifeguards and they will provide you with a free wristband for your children. They will ask you for your phone details and name so that if a child becomes separated from their family or party it is easy for the Foreshore staff to quickly reunite them.

Warning Signs and Flags
Red flags: Bathing is not advised when these are flying.
Red and Yellow flags: Lifeguards patrol the area between these flags (Littlehampton only from East Pier to Norfolk Road).

Observe warning signs - they are there for your safety

Sea Safety
Always swim close to the shore.
Do not jump or dive from the groynes or other structures.
Do not swim after drinking alcohol or eating.
Do not take inflatables into the water - they can get blown out to sea easily.

Sun Safety
Always restrict your exposure to the sun, if you start to turn red then cover up.
Wear at least ’factor 15’ sun tan lotion.
Take extra care with children.

Dogs on the Beach
Dogs are not permitted on some of the beaches during the summer months but there are some beaches where they are welcome, as long as their owners keep them under proper control. Look out for the signs saying where dogs are banned. To find out which beaches this applies to visit our Dog section.

Don’t forget ’SCOOP THE POOP’ Offenders may be fined up to £1,000 on summary conviction. (These laws do not apply to registered blind persons or their guide dogs).

Horses on Beaches
The current byelaws for Seashore & Promenades state that:-

’No person shall on the seashore or promenade break in any horse or other animal or ride or drive any horse or other animal in a race so as to cause danger or annoyance to any person using the seashore or promenade.’

’No person shall between the hours of ten in the morning and six in the evening on any day between the first day of May and the Thirtieth day of September ride any horse or other animal on any part of the seashore and promenade.’

All of Aruns beaches have a similar amount of shingle at the top to form our sea defence and this could make it difficult to access on horseback. Sea Lane at Ferring is a favourite for horse riders because there is a local stables. You may wish to contact such local establishments to find out where they consider access to be the safest.

Kite Surfing
We would encourage kite surfers to use the area of beach opposite the Littlehampton Swimming Centre to the east of the green at Littlehampton as this area provides exciting surfing and is free from groynes. It is also the place where many kite surfers meet. For further information on the sport go to www.kitesurfing.org.

We do not permit kite buggies and land yachts on any of our beaches.

Wind Surfing
Climping Beach has been the favoured spot for this sport for many years along with the area now used by the kite surfers.

Sailing
We have a number of excellent sailing clubs in the area. Take a look at our organisations list for details.

If an organised event or large Beach Barbecue/Party is being considered please contact our Events Section for further advice.

Metal Detecting

Metal detecting is permitted on all beaches where the land is owned by Arun with the exception of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (Climping, Aldingbourne Rife, Bognor Regis Pier to Aldwick and Pagham) where you will need to contact Parks and Greenspaces on 01903 737960. Detectorists should be aware that many areas of the beach and Foreshore are privately owned and specific permission should be sought to operate on these sites. As a guide, Arun owned beaches are at Ferring, West Kingston, parts of Rustington, Littlehampton, parts of Felpham and Bognor Regis.   More information on Arun’s ownership may be obtained from councils.estate@arun.gov.uk
