Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants are provided by Arun District Council for a range of adaptations to assist the disabled to live independently in their own homes. Adaptations can include level access showers, stairlifts, and ramps.

You can obtain further information on the availability of grants by viewing or downloading a copy of the following leaflet; WS236 Disabled Facilities Grants [pdf] 250KB.

How Do I Apply?

An application for grant assistance will be referred to Arun District Council by a West Sussex County Council Occupational Therapist after an assessment has been made at your home.  You may wish to contact OT Connect for an assessment of your needs on 01903 839100, or check eligibility with us first.

The Environmental Health department only administers grant applications for privately owned and rented dwellings; tenants of Arun District Council should contact Arun Housing Services.

The Council has a duty to publish a policy on how it intends to assist residents with repairs to their properties. You can view or download a copy of the Housing Renewal Policy 7 [pdf] 116KB.

More information about the Disabled Facilities Grant

The Council administers mandatory Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) which assist in providing adaptations to the properties of private sector residents to help maintain their independence within their own home. The DFG must be supported by a referral from a West Sussex County Council Occupational Therapist who identifies the needs of the applicant and these must fit within defined mandatory criteria to qualify for funding.

The mandatory DFG provides funding for adaptations to meet the needs of the applicant. Sometimes applicants may chose a preferred scheme or works which will go over and above the basic minimum a DFG will provide, and in these circumstances Arun District Council will provide funding for the minimum mandatory works and it is then the responsibility of the individual / family to provide any additional funding required. The Council is not involved with the drawing up of plans or contractor selection this is the responsibility of the grant applicant. Many applicants choose to employ the services of an agent who will undertake this work and the DFG would cover the cost of any reasonable fees.

A proposed scheme and plans would have to be agreed with the Council and the Occupational Therapist before the funding can be approved to a maximum limit of £30,000.

The DFG legislation does not allow the Local Authority to approve an application for a grant if the relevant works have begun.
