Issues for assessment of eco-towns

The Eco-towns Prospectus, launched in July 2007, set out the vision and outline criteria for assessing eco-towns.  The Government expect an eco-town to deliver outcomes against the following criteria:

  • zero carbon and environmental standards
  • sustainable transport
    • transport plan
    • high-quality public transport
    • strong consideration for traffic impact and congestion
    • minimise need for travel
  • design quality
  • community
    • focus on empowerment and participation
    • ownership and management of assets
  • employment
    • devise economic strategy
    • ensure strong inter-relationship with local economy
  • health
    • promote healthy and sustainable environments
    • plan for tackling health inequality
  • use of land
    • appropriate land-use
    • mitigate biodiversity impacts
    • promote use of brownfield sites
    • ensure strong relationship with surrounding towns/villages

It is against issues such as those laid out by the Government to which the proposed Select Committee will ensure there is public debate upon in the context of the Ford Proposals.  To ensure the greatest level of transparency and debate, interested parties have been able to input into the public discussion.
