Geography

The Arun District is situated in the middle of the West Sussex coastal plain. To the north, the South Downs rise from 200 feet to a maximum of about 700 feet beyond the district boundary, before falling steeply to the broad Sussex Weald.

Arun covers an area of 22,811 hectares (85 square miles), has 23.3 kilometres (14.5 miles) of coastline in the south and almost half the district is included within the South Downs National Park.

Running through the District is the River Arun, which reaches the sea at Littlehampton and divides the area into two roughly equal parts. Between the foot of the Downs and the sea lies a flat coastal plain, where most of the District’s urban development has taken place.
