Business could breathe new life into seafront shelter

Arun District Council has supported the proposal to consider a commercial business opportunity for a shelter on Littlehampton seafront.

The brick shelter was built in the 1950’s and is situated on Littlehampton Promenade and is adjacent to the skate park, midway between Littlehampton and Rustington. It is in poor condition and has suffered from repeated acts of vandalism because of its isolated location and is rarely used as it was intended, as a sheltered sitting area for visitors and residents.

The Council has proposed that the Littlehampton Promenade Shelter site is marketed and advertised as a small commercial business opportunity.

This proposal is expected to enhance and improve the tourism and visitor offer on this part of the seafront and will assist the Council to reduce ongoing costs to the local council tax payer.

Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council and Cabinet Member for Council Strategy, said: “I am delighted to see the Council take a proactive approach in turning what is currently an underused and unsuitable asset into a place where a small business can create a service for residents and visitors, help create local jobs and boost the local economy.”

Any new business use for the shelter site would need to clearly demonstrate how it would enhance the tourism and visitor offer on the seafront of Littlehampton.

The facility could potentially, subject to planning consent, service any of the following needs:

  • Enhance the general public’s use of the promenade or beach and appeal to the local community and   also to visitors.
  • Beach and beach hut users.
  • Skate park users.
  • Kite surfers.
  • Sailing groups.
  • Evening economy

A Commercial Prospectus is being developed for the shelter and will be available to view on the Councils web site in the near future. Further queries should be via Phil Graham, Economic Regeneration Officer by on email at phil.graham@arun.gov.uk.

Littlehampton Regeneration Subcommittee supported the recommendation on Wednesday 6 July 2016 which was approved at a meeting of Arun District Council’s Full Council on Wednesday, 20 July 2016.
