Course helps tourism businesses give their websites a boost

Tourism businesses benefitted from a technical tune up when they attended a Google Analytics training course hosted by Sussex by the Sea, the tourism and marketing brand for Arun District Council.

The half-day course was run by Tourism South East’s digital expert Jon Sharkey, who has undertaken qualifications in Google’s Analytics Academy and has used them to significantly grow traffic on the Visit South East England tourism website over the past two and a half years.

The course, which took place on Wednesday, January 27, was attended by tourism businesses from the visitor attraction, restaurant and specialist retail sectors and focused on specific areas which would help improve the performance of their websites, as well as receiving some very helpful guidance on how to get the most out of Google Analytics to boost their businesses.

It helped businesses understand whether or not visitors are finding and using their websites and allowed them to make informed decisions. The course gave insight into how content, navigation and search engine optimisation can be improved using data some of the businesses never knew existed.

Councillor Paul Dendle, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Amenities at Arun District Council, said: “I am delighted tourism businesses in the Arun district took advantage of this course where they were given a valuable insight as to how Google Analytics can help their businesses grow.

“It is great to see the positive feedback provided by those who participated on the course and I hope tourism businesses will take advantage of future courses on Google Analytics.”

Those who attended found the workshop insightful and some businesses have already started to improve their websites, implementing what they have learnt on the course.

Based on the success of this course and the feedback from businesses, the Council will be running more courses in the future.
