Dogs in open spaces and on beaches – time to have your say

Dogs in open spaces and on beaches – time to have your say Arun District Council is reviewing the rules for dogs in public and wants to hear from residents.

A public consultation has been launched today [6 July] to seek your views on plans to amend and continue the current Public Space Protection Order for dogs in open spaces.

The Council is proposing that the current Arun District Council PSPOs for Dogs, which expires in October 2020, be extended for a further three years until 2023.

The proposed changes are designed to ‘fine-tune’ the existing order and are based upon feedback from the public and our first-hand experience in managing land and enforcement issues in relation to dog controls.

They include allowing dogs in Marine Park Gardens in Bognor Regis and Marina Gardens in Littlehampton, as long as they are on leads under control, and requiring dogs to be kept on a short lead in cemeteries and churchyards.

Failure to comply with the conditions of the Order can result in a fine or fixed penalty notice.

The consultation survey will run from midday on 6 July 2020 to 17 August 2020 and should take between 5-10 minutes to complete.

Councillor Matt Stanley, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Technical Services said: “These orders are put in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the many beautiful open spaces and beaches we have in the district.

“We hope to hear from as many of you as possible, whether you are a dog owner or not, so that your views can help to shape the new order.”
