LDO set to help horticulture sector grow

Planning process set to be made easier for the horticulture sector in Arun

Arun District Councillors have approved a Local Development Order (LDO) for the horticulture sector.

The LDO simplifies and speeds up the planning process for horticulture businesses by permitting additional rights to undertake certain categories of development without the need for planning permission.

This reduces costs and increases certainty for the businesses which form part of an important sector of the economy.

The agreed LDO takes into account feedback from an eight-week public consultation into whether the LDO should be adopted. The consultation received 102 responses.

The LDO applies to 10 areas of land currently used for horticulture in various locations throughout the Arun district.

Some areas of land have been removed from the LDO following responses in the public consultation. The land off Lake Lane, Barnham and land at Binsted has been deleted whilst an area of land at Woodgate has been reduced.

Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council and Cabinet Member for Council Strategy, said: “The Council has embraced LDOs in order to help make the planning process easier in support of our economy.

“The Council’s Economic Strategy to 2026 identifies the horticulture sector as one of four key sectors which are particularly strong in the local economy with good opportunities for economic growth and job creation.”

The LDO for horticulture will be approved for 10 years from the date of its adoption. During this period it will be subject to ongoing review.
