Matt is braving the shave to combat cancer

An Arun Wellbeing Advisor is braving the shave by lopping off his locks for charity.

Each month the Arun Wellbeing team try to highlight different public health topics which prompted Matt Hughes-Short to raise money for Macmillan Cancer, as this month the team is generating awareness about bowel cancer.

Macmillan Cancer is encouraging kind hearted people to trim their hair in order to raise money by supporting their Brave the Shave campaign.

Matt said: “When I was given the opportunity to work on the cancer campaign, I jumped at the chance as my family has previous history with the disease.

“My father died of lung cancer, my grandmother passed away from ovarian cancer and unfortunately my Godfather eventually succumbed to bowel cancer. So, as a way of raising money and awareness, I decided I would brave the shave and whip off all my hair.”

Bowel cancer is a general term for cancer that begins in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer can be referred to as colon or rectal cancer.

Figures provided by Cancer Research UK reveal that around 40,000 new cases of bowel cancer are diagnosed in Britain every year, making it one of the most common types of cancer.

The money collected through the Brave the Shave campaign will be spent on providing people with cancer and their families with the support they need.

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Cabinet Member for Community Services at Arun District Council, said: “I am pleased to hear of Matt’s fundraising for such a worthwhile cause as Macmillan Cancer and I very much hope he exceeds his target.

“Cancer has an impact on most families but luckily there is a lot of support available from charities such as Macmillan Cancer.

“People with cancer or families who have relatives who have cancer may benefit from stress relief information and services provided by Arun Wellbeing.”
