New Chairman for Arun District Council

Councillor Stephen Haymes was elected as the new Chairman of Arun District Council at the Annual Council Meeting on 26 May 2016.

Councillor Haymes received the chain of office from outgoing Chairman Cllr Andy Cooper, who received a vote of thanks for his contributions as Chairman and successful fundraising of £4,636 for his chosen charity, Littlehampton based, Enable Me.

Councillor Jacky Pendleton, a ward member for Bersted, was elected as Vice-Chairman of the Council.

At the Chairman’s reception which followed his inauguration, Cllr Haymes thanked his guests for attending and explained that his focus for the coming year would be to support many varied groups within the Arun district and business communities. Cllr Haymes will be working closely with Arun District Council officers in their fundraising endeavours. During the reception over £200 was raised in aid of Alzheimer’s Society, which is the Arun District Council charity of the month for May.

Guests at the Chairman’s reception included Arun Councillors, all five Honorary Aldermen, past Chairmen, Chief Executive Nigel Lynn, senior officers of the council and civic dignitaries.

This will be the second time Cllr Haymes has fulfilled the role of Chairman having spent 2006/2007 in office. Cllr Haymes first joined the Council 29 years ago as a Conservative ward member for Barnham and is now the Conservative ward member for Yapton and has also served on Yapton Parish Council for 33 years.

Councillor Haymes said: “It is a privilege to have been elected as Arun District Council’s Chairman. From experience I know this will be a busy and rewarding experience. I aim to be a dedicated civic ambassador and am looking forward to meeting more of the Arun community at a wide variety of events."
