New Council leisure centre set to make a splash

Plans to build a multi-million pound leisure centre in Littlehampton have officially been agreed.

At a meeting of Arun District Council’s Development Control Committee yesterday [Wednesday, 4 January, 2017], approval was given for the current leisure centre in Sea Road to be replaced with a new state-of-the-art facility before the old centre is demolished.

It is anticipated the new £15m leisure centre will open in 2019 and is set to offer an eight lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, an 80-85 station gym, a large dance studio, a spinning studio, a sports hall and a café.

Councillor Paul Dendle, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Amenities, said: “I am delighted that Members of the Development Control Committee have approved plans for the new leisure centre.

“The Council can now start building the new leisure centre. We are confident that it will bring much needed health benefits to Littlehampton by inspiring a new generation to take up sport and encouraging those who don’t currently exercise to become more active.

“The new centre will have the space and range of facilities to meet the needs of the growing local population.”

Consultation on the leisure centre took place in October 2016 giving members of the public, regular user groups and local residents the opportunity to comment on the proposals.

Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd has been appointed to undertake the preconstruction phase of the project.
