New Waste Contract saves £400,000 a year

biffa A new multi-million pound contract to deal with the district’s rubbish and recycling has been awarded to Biffa.

Biffa, the Council’s current recycling, refuse collection and street cleansing contractor, offered the most competitive bid and an impressive set of service proposals to win the three-year contract.

Biffa’s 118 staff and their 44 vehicles have provided household recycling and waste collections and street and beach cleansing services for Arun District Council since 2003.

The new contract, which begins on 1 February 2017, will include a number of improvements to the service including kerbside collection of Small Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment [WEEE] and textiles, which will be phased in at a later date, street washing services for regenerated areas, such as Bognor Regis High Street and Littlehampton’s Riverside Walk, and an extended summer service to keep the foreshores even cleaner.

Weekly bin collections and fortnightly kerbside recycling collections will continue and Biffa has pledged to deal with missed collections even faster than before. The company will also continue to operate the popular Green Waste Service Councillor Paul Dendle, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Amenities, said: “We’re delighted to award this contract to Biffa and look forward to working in close partnership with the company, as we have in the past. The service they provide in the district is frequently praised by Arun residents and this new contract provides genuine value for money over the next three years.

“The company is highly respected in its field and the new contract will deliver a top quality service for residents in the district, while delivering substantial savings for the council.”

Roger Edwards, managing director of Biffa’s municipal division, said: “Biffa’s outstanding record of retaining contracts owes everything to the professionalism, flexibility and commitment of our staff. “We’re delighted that the district’s residents will continue to receive quality waste and cleansing services from us for at least the next three to six years.”

The three-year contract, which has an option to extend for a further three years, will deliver close to £400,000 savings annually. This will allow the council to dedicate more resources to nationwide initiatives such as promoting recycling and tackling the issue of fly-tipping.

It also reflects the Council’s 2020 Vision programme designed to make savings while giving residents the best possible service.
