‘Raise the Roof’ exceeds affordable homes target

Arun District Councillors have given the go-ahead for a new housing strategy to be produced following the success of the current one.

Since the Raise the Roof housing strategy was launched in 2010 it has surpassed many of the targets set, including exceeding the objective of building 1,000 affordable homes for sale or rent.

Another highlight has been a developer providing low cost houses for members of the armed forces in Bognor Regis.

Construction of wheelchair accessible homes in East Preston and an extra care housing scheme in Rustington have been other successes.

Additional achievements saw a reduction in the average length of stay of households in temporary accommodation from 40 weeks in 2014/15 to an average length of stay in temporary accommodation of around 16 weeks and the average length of stay in Bed and Breakfasts of three and a half weeks at the end of May 2015.

Raise the Roof sets out the council’s key priorities and explains the work the local authority undertakes with its partners.

Cabinet have given council officers approval to produce a strategy to cover 2016 to 2021.

Councillor Ricky Bower, Cabinet Member for Planning and Infrastructure at Arun District Council, said: “I would like to commend the hard work which has gone into this Raise the Roof 2010-2015 housing strategy from the Council’s officers.

"Providing low cost affordable homes is going to be critical in the future as it will help those who can’t currently get on the housing ladder to do so.

“I am looking forward to building these fantastic achievements now that approval has been given for a new strategy to be prepared.”
