Arun residents warned about unnecessary charges

Arun residents are being warned about companies charging money to help challenge their Council Tax band.

We have been made aware that residents are being contacted by a company charging a fee for this service. Whilst this is not illegal, residents are reminded they can challenge their banding for free by asking the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to check it. We recommend that you do not give your bank details to these companies.

The VOA will tell you how your Council Tax band has been worked out and can review it if you provide information that suggests it is wrong (e.g. evidence that similar properties in your street are in a different band). If they agree your band is incorrect, they’ll put it right for free and we will update your Council Tax bill.

Residents should be warned that if you ask for a reassessment, your band could be moved up as well as down which would result in a higher Council Tax bill.

You can check what band your property is in, challenge your Council Tax band, and find further information on the Valuation Office Agency website.

If you're unsure about a telephone call you have received, please let us know about it on 01903 737752.
