Cockroaches

The common cockroach is a large insect, between 25-30mm in length. They are dark brown in colour. German cockroaches are smaller and lighter in colour. Male cockroaches have wings that cover three quarters of its body length, but females do not have wings. They have long antennae and six legs. The most obvious sign that you have an infestation of cockroaches is the sighting of live insects. If you are unsure, insects can be sent to the Pest Control Team at Arun District Council for identification. Cockroaches produce either little black marks or small faecal pellets, depending on the environment. Cockroaches are a health hazard, as they can carry and spread many diseases such as Salmonella, E. Coli, Dysentery and Gastroenteritis. Their extreme mobility makes their potential to spread harmful bacteria significant. Professional treatment is strongly advised because of the difficulty in locating and managing any infestation.

About the treatment

Our Pest Control Officer will carry out a full survey of the affected area. Treatment is by the use of insecticidal sprays, powders and gels, commonly containing various chemicals, and may require numerous visits.

There are a number of things you can do to help reduce the risk of an infestation, or indeed help the management of a current problem. These include ensuring all surfaces are clean, and washed regularly with antibacterial agents, especially before any food preparation is undertaken. The maintenance of very high standards of hygiene will also help, and this includes clearing away any food debris, and storing all food in sealed containers as far as possible.
