Council Tax Hardship awards
In 2020 following the start of the COVID 19 pandemic the government brought in a mandatory scheme that allowed us to award up to £150.00 to the council tax accounts of working age customers who were in receipt of council tax reduction. The amount was pro-rata’d dependant on outstanding balance and date the council tax reduction started. No claim was required and the award was automatically applied to any qualifying council tax account.
This scheme was only applicable for the for the period 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021.
Whilst the national mandatory scheme is no longer in place; Arun District Council, along with a group of West Sussex authorities, have agreed to continue a local scheme for the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022 based on the same principles of the Governments 2020 scheme. Guidance can be found here: 2021 COVID Hardship Relief guidance [pdf] 648KB
If you are of working age and in receipt of council tax reduction the award will be automatically added to your council tax account, no claim is required.
It is important to note that this scheme ends 31 March 2022; so from 1 April 2022 all working age claimants should expect to pay up to £150.00 more than they did in 2020 and 2021, in addition to their annual council tax charge increase.
