Additional commentary:

  • March saw service capacity reduced to a single community warden due to the leaving of previous post holders. Obvious significant impact on service delivery. Discussions ongoing with regards funding for replacements with hope that posts can be extended beyond initial 18 month period, and recruitment can commence asap
  • reduced capacity has been considered and operational priorities identified; focus on being visible throughout the wider town area and to engage with community events and projects. As part of this approach, the community warden endeavoured to cover as much of the town boundary as possible and engage with members of the public on every occasion. As a result, they were able to further promote the service and pick up on any community safety concerns that people may have had at an early stage
  • regular patrols undertaken of ASB hotspot locations including Horsham Road cemetery, Oakcroft Gardens, Worthing Road allotments, and the High Street. Working closely with the our ASB team to share information about incidents and perpetrators to enable intervention work
  • community warden enhanced engagement with known street community. This involved initiating discussions about public perception of their presence and behaviour, looking at whether they can find alternative locations, and facilitating conversations with other agencies about behaviours. Positive response and interactions, to be taken further over coming months
  • identified safety issue due to unlevel paving as part of public realm works in High Street; reported as urgent to contractors who made safe
  • a number of joint patrols undertaken with local PCSOs to provide public reassurance and to share information relating to any known issues. Previous efforts to establish a strong working link proved beneficial as officers willing to assist community warden as a result of reduced capacity
  • whilst on patrols, two incidents of possible drug dealing witnessed. Intelligence forwarded to the police and our ASB team
  • engagement with Age UK via monthly drop-in session. Community warden identified a concern amongst clients about fraud, particularly doorstep scams. Planning is underway to host a fraud awareness talk at Age UK alongside Police
  • proactive collaboration with Turning Tides has taken place this month in response to an increase in street homeless individuals. Predominantly, this has seen tents being pitched at various out of the way locations, often away from the public eye. Community warden has often been the first to notice these individuals. Offering signposting advice and raising awareness of their presence to Turning Tides and our street homeless outreach team has accommodated early support work
  • engagement with young people across the town has continued, raising awareness of anti-social behaviour issues, and offering words of caution. These conversations have also been useful in obtaining information about specific incidents which, in turn, has aided intervention and/or enforcement action
