Progress is really coming along!! Foundations are going in and the main pool excavation has started!
Southern Water will be on site this week (likely start date of Wednesday 4th October) to undertake trial holes ahead of diverting a sewer pipe later in the year. The attached site plan shows the location of the two trial holes for your information (one in Mewsbrook Park and the other on the redundant blue badge spaces in the lower car park of the current leisure centre). The anticipated time frame for these works is 3 days for the car park and two days for the park. Southern Water will ensure that the trial hole areas are safe and will have barriers around at all times. We would like to apologies in advance for any inconvenience that is caused.
The official start of the construction phase on the new Littlehampton leisure was marked with a Breaking Ground ceremony on Thursday 7 September. View full press release here.
The site set up has been progressing well with the following works taking place:
- Site hoarding and tree protection have been erected.
- The dome has been demolished (including removal of the concrete base).
- The piling mat has been constructed (ground preparation for the building foundations).
- Haul road to the site has been laid.
The above works have prepared the site for the construction phase of the project which is scheduled to start in early September and will be carried out by Willmott Dixon Construction
Please see below a time lapse video showing progress of the demolition work of the dome so far:
It has been confirmed that the works to remove the dome’s concrete base will start on Monday 26th July 2017
Demolition of the dome is currently ahead of schedule and it is anticipated that work will start on removing the concrete base next Tuesday/Wednesday. Please visit our dedicated Facebook page new Littlehampton Leisure Centre to view a video of the works so far!
After 28 years the dome is now being demolished!
Hoarding is being erected around the site of the new leisure centre to allow for the site set up to take place in preparation for the main construction works. Whilst these works take place it unfortunately means that there will be no access to Mewsbrook park from the lower car park at the leisure centre. Access will be via Hendon avenue. We would like to apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
Preparations are taking place for the demolition of the dome which starts on Monday 10th July! The asbestos is currently being removed. Please click image to enlarge
Enabling works (construction site preparation)
From Monday 26 June contractors will be entering the site set up phase of the project. The works are estimated to last 9 weeks and will include the following:
- Erection of site hoarding and tree protection.
- Demolition of the dome.
- Construction of piling mat (ground preparation for the building foundations).
It is anticipated that demolition of the Sports Dome will be carried out week beginning Monday 10 July and will take about 5 weeks to complete. Part of the demolition includes breaking up the concrete slab and it is inevitable that there will be some noise and vibration during this time.
The contractors, John Peck Construction, are part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme and will be working hard to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.
It is possible that dates may change due to the nature of the works and any variations will be communicated via this page.
