When working with organisers in preparation for any event, public safety is our number one priority and there are specific requirements that all event organisers must meet, including the submission of suitable event plans. This enables the Safety Advisory Group (SAG), which includes partners from Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance Service and the Local Authority to consider whether the planning is satisfactory to ensure an event can be run both successfully and safely. Considerable efforts have been made to work with the organisers of the Bognor Regis Pride and Birdman events. This includes the extension of event plan submission deadlines which we normally require nine months in advance of such an event. In this instance the organisers have withdrawn their event application as they were unable to act on the outstanding concerns of the SAG with so little time left until the proposed event date.
Arun District Council recognises the importance of events within the District and this is identified and reflected in the Events Policy which was endorsed by elected Council Members earlier this year.
We welcome the resubmission of the event plans for consideration in future years within the required timeframes, so that the SAG can work with the event organisers to ensure a successful and safe event.
