Temporary road closure in Littlehampton

Temporary road closure in Littlehampton A section of Pier Road in Littlehampton between South Terrace and Clifton Road has been closed temporarily in order to keep the public safe.

The closure, which was funded  by the Reopening High Streets Safely Fund, was in response to concerns about the safety of pedestrians and customers who were having to walk into the road to maintain social distancing as shops, restaurants and cafes in the road also adhere to Covid-19 guidelines. The funding comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) that the government is making available to help all councils in England provide a wide range of safety measures and messaging in a move to keep businesses open safely and customers returning - confident that it is safe to do so.

Barriers have been placed at the beginning and end of the stretch of road, with signs directing vehicles along St Catherine’s Road, and away from Bayford Road and Clifton Road which are signed ‘Residential Access only’. This part of Pier Road will be closed to all vehicles (including cycles) 24 hours a day.

People with mobility issues can be dropped off in Clifton Road or South Terrace, and anyone with a Blue Badge can park in those roads in accordance with Blue Badge parking rules.

Cllr Dr James Walsh, Leader of Arun District Council said: “The decision to close this part of Pier Road has been subject to much consideration and discussion by West Sussex County Council, Littlehampton Town Council and Arun District Council. Making this area as safe as we can for residents and visitors is vital. We know that this change to the flow of traffic causes its own issues and we are asking for patience and co-operation in order that we provide a friendly and pleasant environment for people to visit.”

The temporary closure is due to be in place until the end of September 2020.
