Fines

You may face a fine if you are caught littering, failing to clean up after your dog or spoiling our environment. These fines are called Fixed Penalty Notices.

Why fines are issued

Our residents, businesses and visitors want Arun to be clean - especially our high streets and popular tourist areas.

We hope the cost of a fine will make people think twice about activities that have a negative impact on our environment.

Fines can be issued for dropping litter and cigarette butts, not clearing up after your dog, graffiti and putting up posters without permission (‘fly-posting’).

Charges

There are three possible fine amounts, depending on the activity. Fines are reduced if you pay early.

Littering

  • £65 – if paid within 14 days
  • £80 – if paid after 14 days

Dog fouling

  • £75 – if paid within 14 days
  • £100 – if paid after 14 days

Graffiti and flyposting

  • £50 – if paid within 10 days
  • £80 – if paid after 10 days

If a fine isn’t paid, you may have to go to court and can face a much bigger fine, the maximum being £5,000.
