Blackfriars, Arundel update - 1 June 2026

Scenic view of the River Arun in Arundel with calm water reflecting a stone bridge, historic buildings, and trees, with Arundel Castle rising on a hill in the background; overlaid green banner reads “Blackfriars, Arundel – update” with the Arun District Council logo in the corner. On 2 June 2026, protective hoarding will be installed around Blackfriars, with work expected to take about three weeks to complete. As part of these safety improvements, robust, crash-tested vehicle barriers will replace the existing plastic barriers along Mill Road, creating a significantly safer and more secure route for pedestrians navigating around the ruins.

Parking bays outside the museum are suspended from midnight 1 June to midnight 3 June, to unload materials. There may be some restriction to traffic movement, but this is expected to be minimal.

Once the design is finalised, the hoarding will also feature bespoke artwork, helping to enhance the area's appearance while the site remains secured. Both the hoarding and the upgraded vehicle protection system will stay in place until longer-term plans for the site are agreed, and any future construction works have been completed.
