Council launches summer campaign to keep our beaches beautiful

Arun District Council has joined forces with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to launch a campaign to celebrate our coastline.

#BeautyOfTheBeachArun is aimed at helping people to play their part in keeping Arun’s shores as clean as possible to help improve the quality of bathing water.

The council has teamed up with Spirit FM to promote the campaign and held the first of four fun beach clean events with the radio station last Friday [26 July 2019] on Felpham Beach.

The event featured a fun litter pick and a pebble decorating competition – with the chance to win a family day pass to Butlins and a family swimming pass to either Arun Leisure or Littlehampton Wave.

Over the past few months, the council has installed six solar-powered ‘Big Belly Bins’ between Middleton-on-Sea and Bognor Regis which compact waste and send automatic emails when they’re full, trialled recycling bins along the seafront, put in place extra dog poo bins in Middleton and Elmer, increased litter and dog fouling patrols, held litter picks and launched a poster campaign.

The public can help support the push for cleaner beaches by putting their litter in the bin, recycling their plastic bottles, binning their scraps rather than feeding the gulls, and, when their dog fouls, remembering the ‘it only takes a minute to bag it and bin it…’ campaign launched by the council last year.

Councillor Matt Stanley, Cabinet Member for Technical Services, said: “Many people are unaware that the quality of bathing water is affected by many things, including litter and plastic dropped along the shore, and animals such as dogs and seabirds fouling on the beach.

“This joint campaign encourages us all to take some simple steps in order to protect our beaches and improve the quality of our bathing waters.”
