Council supports Bognor Regis Pier Trust to restore pier’s heritage
At the Arun District Council Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 31 May 2016, it was agreed to give the Bognor Regis Pier Trust £10,000 to support the restoration of the town’s famous pier.
Following discussions with the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Trust has concluded that, as well as restoring the structure of the pier, the buildings on the pier need to be rejuvenated to make their bid more competitive. This extra work has generated additional costs for the Trust which is why they have sought extra funding for architecture and design.
Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council and Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, said: “The Council supports the work of the Pier Trust in their plans to submit a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to restore the Pier.
“A successful bid to improve the Pier will complement future proposals to regenerate both the seafront and the town. Hopefully, this money will help the process.”
Paul Wells, Chairman of the Bognor Pier Trust, said: “We are very pleased that the Council is supporting the Trust with this funding which will help finalise the Heritage Lottery Fund bid the Trust is working on, supported by the owner of the pier.
“Whilst we are fully aware that there is a lot of work still to do, I am confident that the pier can again look magnificent, helping to draw tourists and residents alike to Bognor Regis’ iconic seafront.”
The Trust won a proportion of the £50,000 award from the Coastal Revival Fund in December last year to help it commission the specialist services needed to compile a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to bring the pier structure up to modern standards, while enhancing the heritage features.
