Councillor James Walsh – 50 Years of Service Award

Celebrating 50 years of service for Councillor Dr James WalshArun District Council celebrated Councillor Dr James Walsh for his extraordinary 50 years of dedicated public service at the Annual Council meeting held on 20 May, where Dr Walsh was presented with a Commemorative medal.

Cllr Dr Walsh, an experienced local politician, has served as a councillor in Arun since 1975. He has served as Leader of Arun District Council (2019-2021), Chair of the Council (most recently 2024-2025), two-time Mayor of Littlehampton, and was a long-standing member of West Sussex County Council since 1985.

For five decades, Cllr Dr Walsh has shown an unstinting commitment to Arun's communities. His contribution has helped to shape the district, improve the lives of residents, and strengthen the council's work across generations.

In 2012, Cllr Dr Walsh was appointed the Order of St John for 38 years of service with St John Ambulance. In 2001 he became commander of St John Ambulance, Sussex, in charge of some 800 volunteers who provide first aid cover at events across the county.

Leader of Arun District Council, Councillor Martin Lury said:

“This remarkable milestone reflects not only length of service, but a lifetime of leadership, dedication and genuine care for the people of Arun. His experience, knowledge and committed approach, have earned the respect and gratitude of his colleagues and the wider community.

“We recognise and honour Cllr Walsh's exceptional service and lasting contribution, while he continues to inspire everyone who knows him.”

As of May 2026, he is still active in local government, often advocating for stronger community services during his time representing the Liberal Democrats in opposition and coalition roles.
