Did you know? Habitat Banking is set to start in Arun

Image of a riverside scene with boats in the foreground and Arundel Castle on a hill surrounded by trees under a clear blue sky. Top left, a red speech bubble reads “Did you know?” with a yellow question mark. Top right, Arun District Council and Habitat Banking logos appear above the text: “How will habitat banking work in Arun?”Habitat banking will give the council a clear and practical way to protect and restore nature as the district grows. We will start by reviewing council‑owned land to identify sites suitable for habitat creation or enhancement, carrying out careful assessments to ensure each location can support meaningful biodiversity improvements.

Once suitable sites are found, they will go through the formal process of becoming habitat banks, including ecological surveys, baseline assessments, and long‑term planning. Each habitat bank is a 30‑year commitment, ensuring the site is protected and managed over the long term to benefit both our wildlife and residents. Specialist ecologists will guide every step to make sure all national biodiversity requirements are met.

Because different developments affect different habitats, we aim to create a varied network across Arun, from grasslands and wildflower meadows to woodlands. This diversity helps keep investment within the district, supports local nature recovery and our residents' access to well managed green spaces, and strengthens biodiversity across Arun.
