Did you know? Why does Arun need habitat banking?
Like many areas, Arun is experiencing pressures from a growing population, new homes, and expanding infrastructure. As the district develops, this puts increasing strain on our local habitats, raising the risk of habitat loss and declining wildlife.
Habitat banking gives the council a practical way to respond. By creating new habitats or restoring those that are declining, it helps generate high‑quality spaces for wildlife and for residents to enjoy. These restored areas improve biodiversity, support nature recovery, and strengthen the overall health of our environment. There is also an exciting opportunity to improve and increase access to green spaces.
Most importantly, the council wants to ensure that any habitat lost to development is properly compensated within Arun itself, rather than elsewhere. Habitat banking makes this possible by directing investment back into local nature, helping protect and enhance the green spaces that make Arun special.
