Do summer safely - we all have a role to play in protecting one another

Alt text: Blue promotional poster from Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) featuring the message “If you see something that doesn't feel right” in large white and teal text. A red banner reads “Tell security or report at gov.uk/ACT,” followed by smaller text “We'll handle the rest” and “In an emergency, call 999.” Colourful bunting is shown along the bottom edge against a clear sky background. We are working with Counter Terrorism Policing to help keep everyone safe this summer and are supporting their campaign, encouraging the public to stay alert and report anything that doesn't feel right.

This message is not intended to alarm, but to share important advice, particularly as the national terrorism threat level has recently increased to 'severe.' More details on threat levels can be found here: Threat Levels | MI5 - The Security Service

As part of their national campaign, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay alert and report anything that doesn't feel right when attending events, attractions or travelling at home or abroad - taking simple precautions can help keep you, and others stay safe.

Summer brings more people together in shared spaces, events, seafronts, high streets and transport hubs. While these are places to enjoy, they can also present risks if people are not aware of their surroundings.

  • stay alert, but not alarmed
  • trust your instincts
  • report anything suspicious

If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it. Reporting concerns, even if they seem small, can make a difference and help authorities act early. Public information plays a vital role in helping keep communities safe.

If you need to report something:

Know the guidance - run, hide, tell

While serious incidents remain rare, being prepared can save lives. National guidance from Counter Terrorism Policing and ProtectUK sets out three simple actions to remember:

Run - get to safety as quickly as possible if it is safe to do so. This is always the best option.

Hide - if you cannot escape, find cover, lock or barricade yourself in, and silence your phone.

Tell - call 999 when it is safe and provide clear information to emergency services.

For more practical advice, the Government-backed ProtectUK website offers trusted guidance to help you stay safe.

Enjoy the summer safely

Summer should be a time to relax and enjoy everything our district has to offer. By staying aware, planning ahead, and looking out for one another, we can help ensure it stays that way.

Stay alert. Trust your instincts. Report concerns.

Together, we can keep our community safe this summer.
