Fires started deliberately in the Arun district

Text - in a red banner 'Fires started deliberately in the Arun district' Blue background. Arun District Council logo in top right corner. We are being made aware of regular reports of deliberate fires being started, or trying to be ignited, including in wooded areas. We are working with the fire service to raise awareness of the dangers this poses.

Our staff recently needed to clear a site where people were deliberately attempting to set fire to various items of rubbish. Sadly, this is not a single incident.

March was the driest month on record for 60 years, so this impacts on fires spreading rapidly, as dry vegetation becomes highly flammable. And did you know, fires move faster uphill so sloped areas can accelerate the fires' spread, and we have many of them in our district?

The consequences of deliberating starting a fire are probably not thought of and what some may think is a 'bit of fun' could lead to endangering life and ultimately a prison sentence.

It is an offence to intentionally or recklessly destroy or damage property belonging to another without lawful excuse.

There is no fixed penalty, but it can range from a maximum of life imprisonment for arson with intent to endanger life, to imprisonment for up to eight years for basic arson (no risk to life).

If you witness any such anti-social behaviour, firstly call 999 and ask for the fire service.
