FloodSmart prepare today to protect tomorrow
Flooding can happen quickly and can cause severe damage. Taking steps now can help protect your home and belongings. Here are practical ways to prepare:
Flood barriers
Use sandbags or purpose-made flood barriers to protect doors and low-lying areas. Sandbags can be purchased from builders' merchants or online. Remember - it's your responsibility to protect your property, not the council or Environment Agency.
Check your sump pump
If you have a sump pump, make sure it's working properly and consider a battery backup in case of power cuts.
Raise electricals
Where possible, move electrical appliances and utilities above potential flood levels.
Waterproof storage
If you live in a single-storey home, store valuables and sentimental items in waterproof containers. Keep passports, insurance documents and certificates in a grab bag for quick access.
Seal openings
Seal gaps in walls or foundations to prevent water ingress. Fit a toilet pan seal to stop floodwater or sewage backing up through downstairs toilets.
Secure your home in the event of evacuation
If you need to leave, ensure your property is locked and safe.
Riparian ownership
If you have a watercourse, ditch, stream, river, or culvert on or next to your land, you are a riparian owner. This means you are responsible for maintaining it to prevent flooding elsewhere.
Watercourses help absorb excess rainwater and reduce flooding on roads and paths. A blocked ditch downstream can cause water to back up and flood upstream areas. With winter rain, check your watercourse and clear any debris.
