Keep Arun’s beaches and green spaces safe this summer!
As temperatures rise and more people head outdoors to enjoy Arun's stunning coastline and green spaces, Arun District Council is reminding residents and visitors that fires and barbecues are not permitted on Arun District Council-owned beaches and public open spaces under council byelaws.
While a beach barbecue or fire pit may seem harmless, they can cause significant damage to our natural environment and create serious safety risks for others.
In the current hot and dry conditions, even a small fire can quickly get out of control, increasing the risk of a wildfire that could devastate wildlife habitats, green spaces and nearby properties. Fires can also leave behind litter, scorch marks and damage to the landscape, affecting the enjoyment of these spaces for everyone.
Beach barbecues pose another hidden danger. Stones, pebbles and sand can retain heat long after a barbecue has been extinguished and removed. Visitors, particularly children running barefoot, can suffer painful burns by accidentally stepping on hot surfaces that appear safe.
By respecting the byelaws and leaving barbecues and fires at home, everyone can help protect Arun's beautiful outdoor spaces and ensure they remain safe, clean and welcoming throughout the summer.
Please also remember to:
- take your litter home, especially if the bins are full
- dispose of smoking materials responsibly
- enjoy picnics instead of barbecues
- help protect wildlife and natural habitats
- leave our beaches and parks as you would like to find them
Together, we can keep Arun's coastline, parks and open spaces safe and enjoyable for everyone.
