Recycling is a vital part of the solution, but it is just one piece of the puzzle. To truly live sustainably, we need to start at the top of the waste hierarchy and reduce, reuse, then recycle.

Reduce - less waste, more impact

The best way to cut down on waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. That means choosing products with minimal packaging, buying only what you need, and opting for durable goods that last longer. Every item we don't buy or throw away saves resources and energy.

Reuse - give items a second life

Before tossing something out, ask yourself, can it be reused? From glass jars and fabric scraps to furniture and electronics, many items can be repurposed or repaired. Get creative with upcycling and turn old clothes into tote bags or transform pallets into garden planters. You can also join or host 'swap events' to exchange items with others in your community.

At Arun District Council, we have a designated area in our staff room, where staff donate items including clothes, food, toys, book and toiletries - everyone is welcome to help themselves, and items not taken, are given to local charity shops. Why not try this at your workplace?

Recycle - still essential

When reducing and reusing are not possible, recycling is the next best step. It helps conserve natural resources and reduces the need for newly sourced materials. Make sure you're recycling right - check what can and can't go in your bins Green bin with blue lid - recycling | Arun District Council
