When to contact West Sussex County Council
West Sussex County Council (WSCC) is the Highway Authority for Arun. They are responsible for most decisions about roads, pavements, parking restrictions, traffic management and road safety. Arun District Council enforces many parking restrictions on behalf of the county council, but we do not decide where restrictions are introduced.
Contact West Sussex County Council about:
Parking restrictions
West Sussex County Council decides where parking restrictions are introduced and can consider requests for:
- double yellow lines
- waiting restrictions
- permit parking schemes
- Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs)
- changes to existing parking restrictions
Most parking restrictions are introduced through a legal process called a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).
If you would like to request new restrictions or changes to existing restrictions, you can apply for a TRO to WSCC online, or contact the WSCC Roads and Travel team directly on 01243 642105.

Requests are assessed against county policies and guidance. WSCC can implement these requests through a community highways scheme.

- vegetation blocking roads, pavements or signs

More options are on the WSCC report a problem with a road or pavement page.
Dropped kerbs and vehicle crossovers
West Sussex County Council licences and approves dropped kerbs (vehicle crossovers) that allow vehicles to access private driveways from the public highway.
White access protection lines
White access protection lines (the white H-bars often painted across driveways) are managed by WSCC. These markings are advisory and are not enforceable parking restrictions.
School travel initiatives
West Sussex County Council manages School Travel Plans, School Streets schemes and active travel to school programmes.
Speed cameras
Sussex Police are responsible for operating and maintaining safety cameras across Sussex. If you would like to request a new camera, you can do so using their online e-form.
Dangerous parking
If a vehicle is parked dangerously or obstructively in a location where there are no parking restrictions, district and borough councils cannot take enforcement action. In these cases, please report the matter to Sussex Police.
