Did you know how your Council Tax is spent?

Pie chart showing how weekly Band D Council Tax is split: West Sussex County Council 76%, Sussex Police 11.3%, Arun District Council 8.9%, and Parish average 3.8%. It often surprises people that Arun District Council doesn't keep most of the Council Tax you pay. We collect Council Tax on behalf of West Sussex County Council, Sussex Police, and your local town or parish council. Only a small proportion stays with Arun to deliver the services we're responsible for.

For an average Band D household, for 2026/2027, to fund our local services, Arun District Council only keeps £221.04 or the whole year - just a fraction of this total amount.

The Arun District Council portion of your Council Tax supports a wide range of district‑level services, including:

  • waste and recycling collections
  • housing and homelessness support
  • parks, playgrounds and green spaces
  • environmental health services
  • coastal management and beach cleaning
  • planning and building control

This year, inside your Council Tax pack, you'll also find a useful leaflet about the new waste and recycling collection service, starting in April. This includes changes such as the introduction of weekly food waste collections and adjustments to general waste bin sizes and collection frequencies.

Please keep this leaflet somewhere handy and consider sharing the information with friends, neighbours or family members who don't use digital channels, so everyone has access to the new timetable and service changes.

For full details about the upcoming changes, visit: Changes to your waste and recycling collections coming 2026 | Arun District Council

We have also included a leaflet about how to recognise and report fraud, so please take a look at that too.
