Earth Day – 22 April 2026
Every year on 22 April, Earth Day offers a moment to pause, reflect and recommit to the protection of the planet we all share. First marked in 1970, Earth Day has grown into a global movement, bringing together millions of people across more than 190 countries to take action for the environment.
But Earth Day isn't about one day. It's about recognising that the choices we make every day - at home, at work and in our communities, play a vital role in shaping a more sustainable future.
As we celebrate Earth Day today, Arun District Council reaffirms its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
Our Climate Action and Sustainability Work Plan outlines the steps we are taking to reduce emissions and enhance biodiversity across the district. From increasing solar PV (photovoltaic) installations on council buildings to expanding grassland and wildflower meadows and planting trees across the district in accordance with our Tree Planting Strategy, we are dedicated to creating a sustainable and thriving environments for all.
Why Earth Day matters
We are increasingly seeing the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, from rising sea levels and extreme weather to biodiversity loss and pressure on natural resources. Earth Day is a reminder that caring for the environment is not optional - it is essential for our health, wellbeing and future prosperity.
At a local level, environmental action helps to:
- protect our natural landscapes and wildlife
- build more resilient communities
- improve air and water quality
- reduce energy use and waste
- support a healthier place for people to live, work and visit
Here are some things you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint:
- insulate your home - improve energy efficiency and reduce heating costs
- reduce energy use by turning off lights and unplugging devices
- plant trees and create green spaces - enhance local biodiversity and sequester carbon (this refers to the process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, typically in plants, soils, or geological formations, thereby reducing its concentration and mitigating climate change)
- reduce, reuse, repair and recycle - minimise waste and lower emissions
- choose sustainable transportation - walk, cycle, or use public transport where possible to reduce vehicle emissions
- support local nature by planting flowers or creating habitats for wildlife
- start conversations about climate action with friends, family and colleagues
Join us in our efforts to combat climate change and protect our natural habitats. Together, we can make a significant impact and ensure a healthier planet for future generations. This Earth Day, let's commit to small actions that lead to lasting change.
