Have your say on dog control rules in Arun
Arun District Council has launched a public consultation to help shape the future of its Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) for dogs in public places, and we are seeking your views.
The current PSPOs, which are due to expire on 5 November 2026, set out rules to help keep public spaces clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone. The council is proposing to extend these for a further three years, with some updates based on feedback and operational experience.
The consultation is an opportunity for residents to have their say on whether the existing rules should continue and where changes may be needed.
Current measures include:
- requiring dog owners to clean up after their dogs
- requiring dogs to be put on a lead when directed
- keeping dogs on leads year-round in certain areas such as cemeteries and parks
- excluding dogs from specific locations, including children's play areas and sports facilities
- seasonal restrictions on dogs on certain beaches between 1 May and 30 September
The council is also seeking views on potential changes in specific locations, including:
- Place St Maur in Bognor Regis
- The West Green on Littlehampton seafront
- Caffyn's Field in Littlehampton
- Hotham Park in Bognor Regis
- Bersted Brooks in Bognor Regis
As part of the consultation, residents can also give their views on penalty levels for offences such as dog fouling or allowing dogs into restricted areas.
Councillor Amanda Worne, Chair of the Environment Committee at Arun District Council, said:
“Dog control measures play an important role in helping us to keep our parks, beaches and public spaces clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.
“We want to make sure these rules reflect the needs of our communities, so we're encouraging residents, visitors and dog owners to take part in the consultation and tell us what they think.”
All feedback will be considered before any final decision is made.
The consultation runs until 29 July 2026.
