Top tips for using your new bins

Graphic with a pale cream background and green curved section. Headline reads ‘Simpler Recycling’. Below, large text says ‘Tips for using your new bins’. At the bottom are the West Sussex Recycles logo and the Arun District Council logo.We know some residents are concerned that once the new waste collections begin in April, they may have too much general waste for the new 180-litre bin, which will be collected every two weeks.

To help you make the most of your bins, here are some useful tips for managing your waste once the new service starts:

  • most of the 'smelly stuff' will still be collected weekly - just in the food waste bin, not your general waste bin. Check what can go in your food waste bin at: Food waste collections - West Sussex County Council - the list includes tea bags, coffee grains and eggshells, not just leftovers

  • flatten all cardboard and squash your recycling as much as possible to maximise space. If you need extra capacity, you can request an additional recycling bin here: www.arun.gov.uk/request-a-new-recycling-bin

  • free medical waste and sharps collections are available to eligible residents through Medisort. This can help reduce the amount placed in your general waste bin. Find out more at: www.arun.gov.uk/clinical-waste-sharps-collections/

  • recycle soft plastics at major supermarkets to further reduce what goes into your general waste bin. Find your nearest participating store here: www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator
  • if your household genuinely produces extra waste due to five or more people living at the property, two or more children in nappies or a medical condition that generates non-recyclable waste, you may be able to apply for an additional 180-litre general waste bin. An e-form for applications will be available later this month on our Simpler Recycling webpage at: www.arun.gov.uk/simpler-recycling
