Arun parks retain their coveted Green Flags - 24 July 2015

Arun has yet again scored a hat-trick in the prestigious Green Flag Awards, with three of its parks being judged as among the finest in the UK.

The announcement marks eleven years of Green Flag recognition for Mewsbrook Park, while Hotham Park and Marine Park Gardens hold the award for the seven and five years running respectively.

The annual awards, presented by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, acknowledge high standards of park facilities, including maintenance and community engagement.

Arun District Council’s Ward Members will join Arun District Council parks staff, parks volunteers, local residents and ISS Facilities Services staff to celebrate the awards at Hotham Park on 29 July 2015.

Councillor Terence Chapman, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “Arun is a beautiful place and we are delighted that all the hard work and dedication put into maintaining the district’s parks and green spaces by Arun District Council’s parks team, our contractors ISS Facilities Services, and the parks volunteers, has yet again been recognised by Keep Britain Tidy.”

The Hotham Park Heritage Trust, Hotham Park Conservation Volunteers, Friends of Marine Park Gardens and the Mewsbrook Park Community Support Group all work tirelessly to ensure the parks are at their best.

In total, 1,582 parks, cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens in the UK have met the high standard needed to receive the Green Flag Award or the Green Flag Community Award.

The announcement of this year’s Award winners comes in the same week that thousands of people up and down the country are enjoying Love Parks Week (July 24 to August 2), an annual celebration of our country’s fantastic green spaces and the community groups that bring them to life.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
