Final stage of improvement work to start at Arun Leisure Centre

Anticipated improvements to Arun Leisure Centre, operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Arun District Council, are set to start on the 5 February, including a temporary reception area from the 19 February.

Work to greatly improve and modernise the reception, café and first-floor changing rooms will complete the centre’s ongoing refurbishment, which Freedom Leisure committed to upon winning the contract in April 2016.

A total of £1.4m has been invested in order to improve the centre for the local community with completion planned for August 2017.

Previous stages saw an energy conservation programme which included a new and innovative air handling and water treatment solution, as well as plant room insulation and energy efficient lighting throughout the centre.

The work, which was completed in December 2016, will be effective in reducing carbon emissions, minimising waste and improving the environment for visitors. There was also new tiling in both pools and the pool surround which has refreshed the area and the pool filtration system was refurbished to maintain high standards of water quality.

Freedom Leisure Area Manager Andrew Smith, says: “We are pleased to be entering the final phase of work and while it will inevitably cause some disruption, we are confident that this will be kept to a minimum. The main entrance will move temporarily, some changing facilities will be relocated
and the café will have a reduced menu but there will be no impact on the fitness or leisure facilities.”

Smith adds: “Upon completion the reception and café area will be a bright and airy space with a central reception and café pod – this will make arrival and check in at the centre more efficient. The café will serve Costa coffee and the seating area will be a welcoming space for those meeting friends, waiting for their children to finish a class or simply relaxing after a workout.”

Councillor Paul Dendle, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Amenities, said: “These are exciting times at The Arun Leisure Centre, the first phase of work has already made a huge difference to the look and feel of the centre.

“With the fitness suite changing rooms being expanded and modernised along with the proposed work to the reception and café areas, the refurbished centre will be attractive, fit for purpose and a hub for community health and wellbeing for many years to come. It cements Arun’s reputation for investing in its Leisure facilities.”
