Full steam ahead for renovation of Station Square - 11th Feb 2015

The next phase of a multi-million pound regeneration of the centre of Bognor Regis is starting soon.

Improvements to Station Square will begin next week. The design includes new paving, which will echo the surface in the London Road precinct.  There is a new activity area that will host displays, music and other events.  The vibrant planting, new trees and seating and attractive lighting will encourage people to linger longer as well as providing a fitting backdrop to the historic station building.  The work will transform this key gateway to the town.

The removal of the existing overgrown trees outside the station will be completed first.

The money for the improvements is coming from the £1.6million Coastal Communities Fund awarded last year.

Cllr Mrs Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council, said: “The improvements to Station Square along with the other regeneration planned will positively change the face of Bognor Regis.”

The work will mean that apart from the pavement, the station forecourt will be closed to the public for a short while. However, there will be signage to guide those using the station to other entrances and exits.

The local train operator, Southern Railway, is supportive of the work to Station Square.

Southern Project Manager, Julie Boyle said: “We very much welcome this new development in the regeneration project. Once completed, it will play a big part in providing an even warmer welcome to visitors coming to the town by rail.”

The project is being delivered by contractor Balfour Beatty on behalf of the District, County, and Town Councils. It is expected to be completed by early summer.
