Cyclists are being invited to get in the saddle and enjoy Hotham Park on two wheels.

Consultation carried out by Arun District Council revealed that the public were in favour of waiving a byelaw which prohibited cycling in the Bognor Regis park.

As a result, bikes will be allowed along designated paths in Hotham Park from 23 June 2015. The pedestrian priority cycle paths will run along the south side of the park.

It is hoped the introduction of cycling will improve the link between the park and the seafront, encourage exercise, reduce traffic congestion and offer a safe place for those learning to ride a bike.

New signs have been put up to mark out the routes and one section of the existing path has been widened to accommodate cyclists.

The cycle paths will operate on a two-year trial basis, with a progress report to be presented to Arun District Council’s Leisure, Tourism and Infrastructure after a year.

Councillor Paul Dendle, Arun District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Amenities, said: “The success of Great Britain’s cycling team at the 2012 London Olympics made the sport even more popular and we are glad we have been able to respond to the public’s wishes to open up Hotham Park to cyclists.

“We hope to see the paths enjoyed responsibly by all cyclists, whether they are people choosing a healthier and more environmentally-friendly way to commute to work, visitors to the area travelling with bikes, or young people discovering the joys of cycling.”

Butlins was a major partner in the project and contributed £2,000 towards the scheme.

Jeremy Pardy, Resort Director at Butlins, said: “I am pleased to support this initiative as I believe cycling is a great way to explore the local area and facilities, and in the near future intend to make it easier for any guests at Butlins to do just this.”

Chris Sprules of Bognor Regis Cycle Group, said: “Cycling in the park will provide another safe route from the eastern end of Bognor Regis and the coastal National Cycle Route 2 to the centre of the town and the shops. This off-road route will further encourage those less-competent cyclists who may not wish to use the busy main roads in this area.

“The other massive benefit it will bring will be that of a safe environment for youngsters learning to cycle for the first time. Arun District Council is to be complimented on its attitude to cycling and a healthier environment and this route will complement the new cycle route recently agreed from Littlehampton to Bognor Regis.”
