Men given tips to be more healthy

 

Arun Wellbeing raised awareness of men’s health week by giving hints and tips aimed at making subtle changes to improve male lifestyles.

Research has shown that heart disease kills one in four men in Britain – the same odds as France or Germany winning the Euro 2016 football championship.

Members of the Arun Wellbeing team handed out posters and carried out Wellbeing MOTs at the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis on Friday, June 10.

Sarah Day, Arun Wellbeing Project Development Officer, said: “I saw nine people for a Wellbeing MOT giving them feedback about the impact of their lifestyle on their physical and mental health.

“I gave them some simple suggestions for small changes they can make to improve their results. Many were doing extremely well but some needed some extra guidance to improve their diets and encouragement to become more active.

“Small changes like reducing or stopping sugar in teas and coffees, saying no to biscuits and cake can make a big difference to weight and fat levels in the body.”

Arun Wellbeing’s Home Energy Visitor, Jo Williamson, was also on hand to give tips on ensuring boilers are on the most cost-effective tariffs, upgrading and replacing boilers and how to stay safe in the home. 

Councillor Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Improving health can be a taboo subject amongst men which is why this event to promote Men’s Heath Week is important.

“But there are many things men can do to improve their health and even little steps can make a big difference.

“I would encourage anyone looking to improve their health to visit the Arun Wellbeing website.”

Men’s Health Week is a national week aiming to highlight health issues facing men. It took place between Monday, June 13 to Sunday, June 19. This year’s focus was combatting stress.
