Park chainsaw sculpture sets the benchmark! 13 April 2015

If you fancy taking the weight off your feet while visiting Bersted Park, why not try this bench with a difference on the village green?

The seat has been carved out of wood by chainsaw sculptor Simon Groves as part of a community art project.

The sculpture was unveiled this week and Arun District Council hopes it will inspire residents to come up with a few ideas of what other pieces they would like to see adorning the Bognor Regis park.

The sculptor recently held two public workshops to display pieces of his woodland art, including bears, tables and mushrooms and discuss ideas.

Preliminary sketches have been produced and, due to popular demand, one of the next pieces will be a sofa so visitors can rest and take in views of the lake.

Simon, who has been appointed by the Council to create a series of sculptures for the Bersted Park Site, is keen to not only get feedback on what people would like to see, but also where in the park they should be located.

All are welcome to view a presentation on display at Jubilee Hall in Chalcraft Lane until 13 April 2015, when it will move to Bersted Park Community Centre until 30 April.

Funded by Berkeley Homes as part of the conditions for the development of the site, the project will include an art trail running through the development, taking in key places such as the Village Green and the community centre.

Philippa Dart, Assistant Director of Environmental Services at Arun District Council, said: “This is a great project and it’s fantastic to see the first piece unveiled to the public for everyone to enjoy.

“Although Simon has many great ideas of his own, we are really keen to know what the community thinks will look good in the park, and the best locations. So, if you’d like to see a pig on the village green, let us know!”
