The votes are in – the new park for Bognor Regis has a name!

play park Arun residents have cast their votes – the new park in Bognor Regis will be called Pavilion Park.

Last month, Arun District Council opened a poll to give residents the chance to have their say on the name, giving them the options of – Pavilion Park, Princess Charlotte Park and Duke of Sussex Park.

A total of 227 people voted with Pavilion Park narrowly coming out on top with 47% of the vote. Duke of Sussex Park was a close runner-up with 44%, and Princess Charlotte Park received 9% of the vote.

The £3million design, commissioned by Arun District Council, is set to transform Hothamton car park into a modern, multi-use park to suit all age groups.

It will form a major part of the regeneration of the town and follow on from smaller projects recently delivered by Arun District Council; including the successful Beach on the Beach sand play area, the Play on the Beach play area and the investment put into the popular Hotham Park, including the creation of the new café which opened in 2015.

Subject to planning consent, Pavilion Park will include a number of features, including water play and a natural play area, a performance area to host a rolling events programme, a central market square, and a café with seating both inside and outside.

So it can be enjoyed after dusk, the new park will be well lit providing a pleasant environment and also extending its use into the evening, as well as ensuring it  is fully accessible to all. Planting will be introduced into the park and car park setting; with parking anticipated to be for around 200 vehicles.

The western side of the car park will be marketed to developers for residential use at a later stage.

Councillor Mrs Gillian Brown, Leader of Arun District Council and Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “I’m delighted that residents engaged with this poll and have chosen a winner; the name Pavilion reflects the history of the site.

“More than 200 people participated in the poll which demonstrates there is support in the community for the new park. Arun District Council is excited to see this project progress in the New Year, and we hope to deliver the new Pavilion Park as soon as possible so that the community as a whole can enjoy all it will have to offer.”

Award-winning landscape designers LUC [Land Use Consultants] have been appointed to develop the designs for the park in preparation for a planning application being submitted.

Further engagement with the public is planned as the project details develop.
